Garrett-Hammett Sees Season-High Game in 70-57 Victory of Over West Florida

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama women's basketball team had four Tigers score in double figures to defeat West Florida 70-57 in a Gulf South Conference matchup Friday evening in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.

UWA handed UWF its first conference loss of the season. With the win, the Tigers improved to 10-3 on the season and are now 4-1 in GSC play. The Argonauts dropped to 10-2 overall and are now 5-1 in the conference.

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett led the Tigers with a season-high of 31 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Lauryn Lilly added 12 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Jala Williams contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Bria Dent posted her seventh double-double, scoring 10 points and bringing down 10 boards. 

In the first quarter, UWA outscored UWF 18-13. Garrett-Hammett had seven points, Williams had seven, Lilly drained a three-pointer, and Dent had a jumper to round out the scoring in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Garrett-Hammett scored at the 8:41 mark to improve the lead to 
20-13. UWF responded by going on a 5-0 run to cut UWA's lead to 20-18. With 7:25 minutes remaining in the second quarter, the Tigers outscored the Argonauts 15-4 to gain the 35-22 advantage over UWF heading into halftime.

West Florida made four three-pointers in the third quarter which allowed the Argonauts to cut UWA's lead to 50-40. 

In the fourth quarter, West Alabama outscored West Florida 20-17 to close out the game with a 70-57 win over the Argonauts.

As a unit, UWA shot 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the floor, and 77.3 (17-of-22 ) percent from the free throw line. 

UWF Peyton Lewis led the Argonauts with 16 points, five assists, and three rebounds.

The Tigers limited the Argonauts to shooting 34 percent (17-of-50) from the floor. 

West Alabama dominated the paint scoring 36 points compared to West Florida's 10 points. The Tigers turned the Argonauts 15 turnovers into 16 points.

UWA hosts Valdosta State in a GSC matchup on Sunday, Jan. 2. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.
