DSU Snaps Tigers Winning Streak

CLEVELAND, Miss. - West Alabama women's basketball took a 78-76 overtime loss from Delta State in overtime Saturday evening at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

The Tigers dropped to 6-2 and are now 1-1 in GSC play. The Statesmen improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Four Tigers scored in double-digits in the game. Zoe Watts scored 18 points and collected three rebounds. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett posted a double-double, scoring 16 points and bringing down 10 boards. Jala Williams added 14 points, dished out six assists, and had three rebounds. Naelyn Rios chipped in 13 points, three assists, and three rebounds. Bria Dent also posted a double-double, scoring 10 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Jada Golden added five points to round out the Tigers' scoring. 

In the first quarter, Delta State hit a three-pointer 20 seconds after tip-off to give the Statesmen a 3-0 advantage. The Tigers responded by going on a 20-12 run to close the first quarter with a 20-15 advantage over the Statesmen. Watts scored eight points in the first quarter. The sophomore center went 2-for-2 from the paint and 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

With 8:43 remaining in the second quarter, the Statesmen went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead of the Tigers 21-20. Junior guard Rios snapped DSU's run by making a free throw to bring the game to a tie, 21-all. 

With 5:43 remaining in the second quarter, Dent drained a jumper to take back the lead 23-21. The Statesmen then outscored the Tigers 12-11 to close out the second quarter with UWA still holding on to the lead 34-33 at halftime.

DSU started the third quarter off with four points by putting up two jumpers. UWA responded with a 6-0 run. Garrett-Hammett made a layup and a jumper, while Rios made her layup, allowing the Tigers to take back the lead, 40-37. The Tigers were outscored 12-8 by the Statesmen the remainder of the third quarter to put DSU ahead of UWA 49-48. 

The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle. Garrett-Hammet knocked down two free throws at the 9:53 mark. The Statesman then went on a 7-0 run. With 7:47 remaining, Watts drained a free throw allowing the Tigers to go on a 9-0 run, giving UWA a three-point advantage over DSU 59-56. 

Delta State knocked down two free throws with 42 seconds left to put the Statesmen above the Tigers 68-67. With 34 seconds remaining in the game, Rios drained her free throw to tie the game 68-all. The Tigers' defense held the Statesmen offense ending the regulation game in a 68-68 tie.  

Delta State struck first in overtime and made a layup, giving them a two-point advantage over the Tigers, 70-68. Watts brought the game to a tie by making her layup at the 4:27 mark. DSU then went on a 6-0 run to push the Statesmen ahead of the Tigers 76-70. 

With 1:55 remaining Garrett-Hammett made two free throws and a jumper to cut DSU's lead 76-74. Watts drained a jumper to bring the game to a tie, 76-76 with 25 seconds left. With three seconds left in the game, Delta State made a jumper to claim the 78-76 win over West Alabama in overtime. 

As a unit, UWA shot 48 percent (26-of-54) from the field and 76 percent (22-of-29) from the free throw line. 

The Tigers limited the Statesmen to shooting 33 percent (6-of-18)  beyond the arc and 42 percent (27-of-65) from the field. 

Moriah Hurst paced Delta State with 17 points and six rebounds.

The Tigers return home Tuesday, Dec. 7 to host a non-conference matchup against Young Harris. Tip-off time is set for 5 p.m. in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.
