Women’s Basketball Snaps Streak, Defeats Young Harris 69-65

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama women's basketball handed Young Harris College its first loss of the 2021-22 season. The Tigers defeated the Mountain Lions 69-65 in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening in Puritt Hall Gymnasium. With the win, the UWA improved to 7-2 on the season, while YHC dropped to 6-1.

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett paced the Tigers. The LaGrange, Georgia native scored a season-high 28 points, going 10-for-15 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line. The senior forward also had five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Lauryn Lilly added 11 points, dished out four assists, and had one steal. Zoe Watts chipped in 10 points, two rebounds, and two assists.

In the first quarter, Young Harris was the first team to put points on the scoreboard by making a jumper at the 8:04 mark. From there it was a back-and-forth battle the whole game. The Mountain Lions outscored the Tigers 19-16 to close the first quarter out with a 21-16 lead.

YHC scored five points to start off the second quarter, giving the Mountain Lions a 26-16 advantage over the Tigers. Garrett-Hammett put up two points for UWA after making a layup. With 8:32 remaining in the quarter, the Tigers went on a 13-8 run to cut the Mountain Lions' lead 34-31. Jada Golden hit a three-pointer to tie the game 34-34 at the 3:08 mark. 

With 2:28 remaining in the second quarter, Watts made a layup, which allowed UWA to lead the game by two points, 36-34. The Mountain Lions made one more layup to close out the second quarter 36-all before heading into halftime.

Coming out of the half, Young Harris gained a five-point advantage by making a layup and  hitting a three-pointer to put the score at 41-36. UWA responded by going on a 12-6 run and closed out the third quarter with the Tigers leading 48-47. 

In the fourth quarter, the Mountain Lions made a layup to pull ahead of UWA, making the score 49-48. With 7:41 minutes remaining, both teams had scored five points. The Tigers then went on a 6-2 run to gain a 58-55 advantage over the Mountain Lions. 

With 4:37 remaining in the fourth quarter, UWA outscored YHC 10-8 to close out the period with a 69-65 win over Young Harris.

As a unit, UWA shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the floor and 78.3 percent (18-of-23) from the free throw line. 

Niaya White and Mackenzie Johnson both led the Mountain Lions with 13 points and seven rebounds. 

YHC shot 47.5 percent (28-of-59) from the floor, 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from the three-point line, and 50.0 percent (3-of-6) from the free throw line. 

The Tigers outscored the visitors in the paint 38-32 and turned the Mountain Lions 15 turnovers into 16 points.

The Tigers return to action Monday, Dec. 13 to battle Young Harris again in a non-conference matchup in Young Harris, Georgia. Tip-off is set for 10 a.m.
