LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Kortrijk Miles recorded his third double-double of the season, and Justin Allison shot a game-winning free throw in a nail-bitting 61-60 victory against the University of Tennesse Southern Tuesday night. The Tigers outlasted the Firehawks inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium to improve to 7-2 on the season.
Miles, a junior guard, put up a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead UWA against the Tennessee Southern. The Dallas native went 6-for-12 from the field and 7-for-7 at the free-throw line to be the only Tiger with double-digit scoring on the night.
Other UWA top scorers include Allison and Kavan Hill, with nine points each, and Shardarrion Allen, Robert Davis, and Te Smith with eight points.
As a team, UWA went 20-for-48 (41.7%) from the floor, 4-for-16 (25.0%) in three-point range, and 17-for-21 at the line. The Tigers scored 28 points in the paint and had 17 off turnovers.
After the loss to West Alabama, Tennessee Southern falls to 7-4 on the season. Brady Brown led the team with 15 points, and Tad Sivley led the Firehawks in rebounds with nine.
UTS made 20 of 50 shots (40.0%) from the floor, including 8 of 19 in from beyond the arc. The Firehawks made 12 on 15 (80.0%) attempts at the free-throw line.
Tennessee Southern was a fierce opponent for West Alabama, keeping the score tight throughout the contest.
In the matchup, the Tigers saw their largest lead of 53-45 with 7:57 left to play, but the Firehawks did not stay down long.
Tennessee Southern went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 55 with just over two minutes remaining. UTS added a three-pointer seconds later to take the lead, but Davis answered with a layup to put the Tigers within in one, 58-57.
Allison added a layup and a free-throw in the final minute as West Alabama took a 60-58 advantage.
A Firehawk jumper tied the game at 60 with just five seconds on the clock. And the game appeared to be going into overtime.
But with .6 seconds on the clock, UTS fouled Allison to take him to the line. The Pelham, Ala. native split the free throws to give UWA the 61-60 victory.
West Alabama will return to the court on Thursday, Dec. 9, traveling to Carrolton, Ga. to face conference opponent West Georgia. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
