CARROLLTON, Ga. - Shardarrion Allen and Te Smith led the West Alabama men's basketball team in a 68-58 victory over West Georgia on Thursday evening.
Returning to league play after a 61-60 victory over Tennessee Southern on Tuesday, UWA (8-2, 2-1) traveled to Carrolton, Ga., to take on the Wolves (3-5, 1-2) inside The Coliseum. In the contest, Allen and Smith tallied 14 points each to head the Tigers scoring effort.
Kortrijk Miles had 13 points, Robert Davis had 10, and Justin Allison added 7 to help UWA win its second conference game of the season.
Allison also led the team in rebounding, tying the game-high with six boards.
West Alabama shot 43.4 percent from the floor in the action, winning the on-court points battle 40-8 and points off turnovers 21-8. UWA also racked up more steals than the Wolves 13-3.
There were some areas for improvement for the Tigers. West Georgia's bench outscored the UWA 18-10, and the Wolves won the rebound game 36-28.
The Tigers went back and forth with the Wolves in the opening minutes of the competition before taking the lead for good at 11-10 on Allen's layup. The layup sparked a 9-5 run, and a three-pointer by Smith gave UWA its largest lead of the half, 23-15, with 5:41 left to play.
West Georgia did not stay down long. The Wolves spent the remainder of the period hacking away at the deficit to close the half within two of the Tigers lead, 28-26.
West Alabama continued its first-half momentum after returning from the break. Davis struck first for the Tigers with a three-pointer 19 seconds into the period, starting a decisive 10-2 run.
The Wolves could not bounce back, and UWA took the game 68-58.
The Tigers will take another break from conference play as they host Palm Atlantic Beach University on Tuesday, Dec. 14. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.
