LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Tigers defeated Delta State 3-1 in Gulf South Conference Men's Soccer action Sunday night.
West Alabama improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the GSC. Delta State falls to 0-2 overall and in GSC play.
"It feels great to get our first home and conference win of the season," said UWA head coach Ross Nelson. "The men executed the game plan very well tonight against a well coached and organized Delta State team."
The Tigers displayed a strong offensive performance with 13 shots compared to four shots for the visiting Statesmen. UWA finished with nine shots on goal while Delta State had one.
Richard Lopez scored the first goal of the match within two minutes of the first play off an assist from Maxime Correia.
Vince Stans scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Kyle McLeod at the 44:18 mark to put UWA 2-0. Lopez later assisted on a goal by Reda Ikarrain at the 54:33 mark to give the Tigers the 3-0 advantage.
Delta State got on the scoreboard at the 54:44 mark by Joe Elliot. The Tigers held on to the lead bringing the final 3-1.
"Overall it was a very good performance. As always, it's important now that we optimize our recovery and shift all our focus to our next game," continued Nelson.
UWA returns to action Friday in Memphis, Tennessee to take on Christian Brothers at 6 p.m.
