Garrett-Hammett, Dent Lead UWA to Win over CBU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Tazsa Garrett-Hammett and Bria Dent both notched double-doubles one day out of COVID-19 quarantine to lead West Alabama to an 82-75 Gulf South Conference women's basketball win over Christian Brothers Sunday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

West Alabama improved to 8-6 overall, 7-6 in GSC play. Christian Brothers is 4-7 overall and 4-7 in the league. The Tigers and Lady Bucs complete the two-game set Monday at Pruitt Hall. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.

Garrett-Hammett scored 28 points and collected 10 rebounds, while Dent had 16 points and 13 boards. Zoe Watt chipped in 15 more points on a 7-for-8 afternoon from the floor. Garrett-Hammett made 7-of-13 field goal attempts and converted 14-of-16 from the free throw line with five assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Dent was 7-of-12 from the floor.

"The average person in the stands wouldn't know that Tazsa and Bria have been out for 10 days," Tigers head coach Rusty Cram said. "They knocked the rust off pretty quickly after getting out of quarantine.

"Christian Brothers plays hard and forces you to make adjustments. It's basically their threes versus our inside game," Cram said. "I do know that this team has still not played its best basketball game."

West Alabama owned the inside, outrebounding CBU 46-22 and outscoring the Lady Bucs 46-18 in the paint in a game where the lead changed hands eight times and the score was tied five times.

After leading 38-33 at the half West Alabama stretched its lead to 12 points with 3:02 to play in the third quarter on the strength of an 11-0 run and led 64-54 after three quarters.

Christian Brothers rallied back to tie the game at 72 on a jumper by Brynne Lytle with 3:36 left. A Garrett-Hammett layup 23 seconds later gave UWA a lead it would not relinquish.

Lytle led all scorers with 36 points, just nine shy of her season-high of 45 against Mississippi College on Jan. 29. Lytle made 12 field goals, six from beyond the three-point arc as the Lady Bucs converted 14-of-27 from long range (51 percent). She also recorded seven steals.

Emily Jones was the only other CBU player to score in double figures with 16. Darcy Doran collected five rebounds to lead CBU.
