Tigers Sweep Mississippi College to Even Record at 3-3

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Jake Nemith collected five hits and Gavin Rogers hit his second home run of the season as West Alabama swept a baseball doubleheader from Mississippi College Monday at Tartt Field. UWA won the first game, 6-5, and the nightcap, 11-7.

The games did not count in the Gulf South Conference standings, leaving the Tigers 3-3 overall and 1-3 in league play. Mississippi College is 0-6 and 0-4.

"I was pleased with the way we came out ready to play and then with the way we were able to fight back when we needed to," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "Jake Nemith continues to see the ball well and is swinging a hot bat for us.

"Gavin Rogers drove in runs and then pitched well in the second game," Rundles said. "It was just good to get some games in after the last couple of weekends and I thought we took advantage of our opportunities."

Nemith's five hits raised his team-leading batting average to .480. Rogers drove in three runs and improved his batting average to .429 with three hits in the twinbill. Taylor Clemmons also had three hits.

Trailing by a run going into the bottom of the fifth in the second game, West Alabama scored eight runs in its final two at bats to put the game, and the sweep, away.

Mason Hollander (1-0) picked up the win in the opener in relief of starter Javian Stone, allowing no runs and one hit over 3.2 innings. JP Elkins got the final four outs to record his first save. Three Tiger pitchers allowed just four MC hits in the opener. Mississippi College reliever Truitt Smith (0-1) was charged with the loss in the first game.

Rogers (1-0) earned his first win in relief of starter Connor Brooks in the nightcap, allowing two hits and one earned run in two innings pitched. Bryce Lewis (0-1) absorbed the loss in the second game for the Choctaws.

Dakota Kennedy had a grand slam for Mississippi College to give the Choctaws a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning of the first game, but UWA pushed across two in the seventh to seal the win when pinch runner Colden Peeples scored on a passed ball and Houston Kitterman drove in a run with a single.

Ken Scott had a pair of hits in the nightcap for MC. Alex Hay homered for the Choctaws, his first of the season.

West Alabama continues a seven-game homestand when Christian Brothers visits Tartt Field for a three-game GSC series this weekend. The Tigers and the Bucs are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. The Choctaws are hosting Miles College in a three-game non-conference series this weekend.
