Tigers Drop Two to Open Season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The results were not the ones sought for the University of West Alabama Volleyball team, but the Tigers showed fight in a loss in five sets to the University of Montevallo Lady Falcons followed by a loss in four sets to the hosting Auburn University in Montgomery Warhawks Wednesday night at the AUM Athletics Complex.
 
"Although we did not get the outcomes that we wanted, we did some great things on the court today. We learned things about ourselves and got better as a team," said Head coach Hilary Lobenstein. "We look forward to our next match."
 
Despite playing two traditional in-state Gulf South Conference rivals, tonight's matches did not count in the standings. UWA is 0-2 to start the season while Montevallo is 2-0 and AUM opened the season 1-0. 
 
Montevallo 3, West Alabama 2
 
The first match of the season featured a back-and-forth slugfest between the two squads in which neither team won consecutive sets until Montevallo took the final two sets to grab the 3-2 victory. 
 
UWA won the first and third sets both with a score, 25-23, each while the Lady Falcons won the second set and fourth set with the exact same score, 25-17 for each one before claiming the final game 15-10. 
 
Ally Craig led the Tiger attack with 19 kills on a .245 attacking percentage she finished with a service ace offensively as well. Madison Fisher put up 10 kills in her UWA debut with two service aces as well. Desiree Blount kept the offense moving with 42 assists while adding three kills and a per of service aces. 
 
MacKenzie Wells led the back row with 23 digs while Fisher posted 15 digs and Blount added 14 digs. Kira Lilly finished with three block assists and a solo block to lead the front-line defensive effort. 
 
Amanda Nugent led the way for the Falcons with 20 kills while Evelina Teran put up 17 kills and Allie Dishman posted 11 kills. Isabelle Fuell put up 54 assists and 11 digs. 
 
West Alabama finished with a team attack percentage of .157 with 50 kills and 23 errors on 172 attacks while Montevallo posted a .223 attack percentage with 66 kills and 25 errors on 184 attacks. 
 
Auburn Montgomery 3, West Alabama 1 
 
The Tigers fell in the second contest of the evening, 3-1, to the AUM Warhawks who were waiting to open the season after watching UWA go to five sets just a little while earlier. 
 
AUM won the first set, 25-14, and the second, 25-22. The Tigers rallied to win the third game 
25-20 before falling in the fourth set, 25-20, to conclude the day.
 
Craig once again led the way with 12 kills on a solid .400 attacking percentage. Nathalia Medeiros added 11 kills on a .429 attacking percentage. Blount posted another double-double effort for the evening with 36 assists offensively and 12 digs defensively.
 
Wells once again led West Alabama in digs with 18 while Ja'Bria Green led the front row effort with two solo blocks. 
 
As a unit, UWA posted a .195 attacking percentage with 41 kills and 15 errors on 133 total attacks. AUM finished the evening with a .331 attacking percentage with 65 kills and 16 errors on 148 total attacks. 
 
Nyah Whittlesey led four Warhawks with double-digit kills with 16 added 15 digs. Giada Pais-Marden posted 13 kills while Ashley Hudson and Carla Butler both turned in 10 kills each. 
 
The Tigers return to action next Wednesday, March 3 for the first GSC Group A matchup of the season with their home opener against Mississippi College scheduled to start at 6 p.m. in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium in Livingston, Alabama.
