Hot Half Propels UAH over Tigers

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A slow, grinding first half gave way to a phrenetic second half but the University of West Alabama Men's basketball team came out on the losing end of the effort with a 71-62 loss to the Alabama Huntsville Chargers Saturday afternoon in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium in Gulf South Conference West Division action.

UWA shot 42.4 percent (14-of-33) from the floor in the second half, but UAH took and hit some tough three pointers to the tune of 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the behind the arc during the second 20-minute period.

"Give credit to Huntsville, that's a veteran group that took advantage of our mistakes," said Head coach Nick Woodruff. "I'm proud of our fight. Our team got better from Friday to Saturday. You find out a lot about yourselves when things aren't going well. This team wants to do better and if we are humble and critical of ourselves, we can continue to improve."

Alabama Huntsville (8-1, 8-0 GSC) came out strong in the second half and built a 14-point, 55-41, lead at the 9:59 mark off a three from JJ Kaplan. West Alabama (3-5) battled with the Chargers getting within single digits six times including down to a six-point game, 61-55 with 4:13 to go, but the UAH offense was too hot to slow down in the half.

Shardarrion Allen led UWA with 16 points, nine rebounds, four assists and block while Kortrijk Miles put up 14 points, five rebounds, a block and a steal. Brice Martin came off the bench and totaled 13 points, six rebounds and two steals. Robert Davis rounded out the double-digit scorers for West Alabama with 11 points along with five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

For the game, the Tigers shot 43.3 percent (26-of-60), 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from three and 62.5 percent (5-of-8) at the free throw line. Alabama Huntsville finished 49 percent (24-of-49) from the floor, 42.8 percent (14-of-32) from beyond the arc and 75 percent (9-of-12) in free throw attempts.

The first half, which ended in a 28-28 tie, featured eight lead changes and three ties. West Alabama sprinted to a 7-0 advantage capped by a fast break layup by Miles.

However, the Chargers responded with a 12-4 run of their own to take a 12-11 lead at 11:59 which the Tigers prompt responded with layup from Brice Martin to go up 13-12.

UWA extended the lead to 18-12 before Sam Orf connected on consecutive three-pointers to tie the game once more at the 4:47 mark.  From there the teams traded the lead two more times as Kerney Lane put in a layup with 41 seconds left to close the half at 28-28.

Kaplan led UAH with 16 points and five rebounds. Max Shulman scored 15 point while Seth Swalve finished with 12 points and six assists while Orf and Luke Barnett both contributed 11 points each.

The Tigers step out of conference play next Thursday to host Southeastern Baptist College at 6 p.m. in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium. Links to tickets, live stats and live video will all be available on uwaathletics.com.
