Big Third Propels UWF Past Tigers

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida exploded for seven runs in the third inning on the way to an 8-2 Gulf South Conference baseball victory over West Alabama in the season opener for both teams Saturday at Jim Spooner Field.

Ranked 20th nationally, the Argonauts used six hits and a pair of bases on balls to put together the big inning. Miller Hancock had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs in the seven-run third, while Cullan O'Shea ripped a three-run triple in the frame.

West Alabama opened the game with three consecutive base hits, but managed just one run and left the bases loaded to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Tigers other run came in the fifth when Justin Booker walked, moved to second on a single by Nick Sims and scored on an Argo throwing error.

West Florida added another run in the seventh inning when Matt Estrada was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a Tiger error.

UWF starter Ryan Brewer (1-0) worked five innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits, to pick up the win. After allowing the first five West Alabama hitters to get on base, he retired 11 straight before giving up an unearned run in the fifth. Josh Palhad worked four scoreless innings for his first save.

West Alabama starter Peyton Warren (0-1) absorbed the loss, allowing seven hits and seven earned runs over four innings. Tiger relievers Landen Davis, Devin Sisson and Logan McDowell combined to allow just one hit and no earned runs over four innings, striking out eight.

Jake Nemith had two singles to pace a seven-hit UWA attack. O'Shea, Hancock and Jack Schad had two hits each for West Florida.

The Tigers and Argonauts are scheduled to finish the three-game series with a doubleheader Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
