UWF Completes Sweep of Tigers

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida belted out 21 hits on the way to sweeping West Alabama in a Gulf South Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday at Jim Spooner Field. The Argos held on to win the first game, 4-3, before cruising to a 10-0 win in the nightcap.

The 20th-ranked Argonauts start the season 3-0 overall, 3-0 in the GSC. West Alabama is 0-3 and 0-3.

West Florida jumped to a 4-0 lead after four innings in the first game, only to have to hold West Alabama off in the final inning for the victory.  There was never any doubt in second game as UWF jumped to a 5-0 lead after two innings and never looked back.

Bryant Harris blasted a solo home run in the second inning of the first game before Miller Hancock singled, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a balk to give UWF a  2-0 advantage. The Argos stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fourth when Dylan Menhennett doubled in a pair of runs with two outs.

Josh Bower singled and Jacobey Hawthorne doubled to start the top of the fifth. Jonathan Thibodeau's single scored them both to cut the UWF lead in half. Gavin Rogers belted a pinch-hit solo homer to lead off the ninth to cut the Argo lead to 4-3 before UWF catcher Sam Clement threw out Hawthorne trying to steal second base for the final out of the game.

After jumping to the 5-0 lead in the nightcap, West Florida scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings despite leaving the bases loaded in both frames. Justin Dunnam's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth scored pinch runner Sam Harris to end the game in the eight.

Hawthorne had a pair of doubles for UWA in the first game and was the only Tiger with multiple hits in either game.

Miller Hancock went 5-for-8 in the two games to pace West Florida. Jack Copley had three hits in the second game and Menhennett had four hits in the doubleheader, including two doubles and a home run. Dunnam drove in three runs.

West Florida starting pitchers Evan Floyd (1-0) and Tyler Dowdy (1-0) earned the pitching wins. A true freshman, Dowdy allowed just two hits and no earned runs over seven innings in game two while striking out five. Floyd struck out six over five innings in the opener. Brendon Case earned first save in the first game.

West Alabama starters Javian Stone (0-1) and Connor Brooks (0-1) were tagged with the losses. Mason Hollander worked 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball while striking out four and walking none in relief of Stone in game one.

West Alabama welcomes Mississippi College (0-2, 0-2) to Tartt Field for a three-game series beginning with a single game Friday at 3 p.m. West Florida hosts Spring Hill (0-0) in a non-conference game Wednesday.
