Tigers Fall to Lady Chargers, 73-52

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama Women's basketball team could not find its legs in the final of six straight games on the road and end the stretch with a 73-52 loss to the Alabama Huntsville Lady Chargers Saturday afternoon in Spragins Hall in a Gulf South Conference West Division matchup.
 
The Tigers (6-6, 5-6) offense started well and went 71.43 percent (5-of-7) from the floor in the first quarter but went 37.1 percent (13-of-35) the rest of the way.
 
"Hats off to Huntsville. They really played well," said Head coach Rusty Cram. "We have got to find the basket again. We're missing too many shots."
 
Jala Williams set a career high with 16 points including a 3-for-3 effort from beyond the arc along with five rebounds and two assists. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett scored 14 points while Bria Dent led on the boards with eight rebounds along with nine points. 
 
As a team, UWA shot 42.9 percent (18-of-42) from the field, 57.1 percent (4-of-7) at the three-point line and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) in free throws.
 
The tightly contested fourth quarter featured seven lead changes and two ties. Williams gave the Tigers the first lead with a layup just 24 seconds into the contest. After layup on UAH's side, Garrett-Hammett hit a free throw to put UWA up 3-2.
 
West Alabama's final lead in the contest came at the 2:29 mark in the first after Williams connected on a three to put the Tigers up 13-12. UAH outscored the Tigers 5-1 to end the first with a 17-14 lead. 
 
The teams battled in another tight quarter with the Lady Chargers taking a 19-14 advantage in the second and a 36-26 lead to the half.
 
Neither team scored well in the third quarter, but with UAH having a 12-7 edge in the time frame the team was able to push the lead to 48-35 after three quarters. The Lady Chargers went on to outscore UWA 25-17 in the final quarter en route to the 73-52 win. 
 
Selena Pruitt led the way for Alabama Huntsville with 23 points along with four rebounds. Holly Harris scored 17 points and added three assists, three steals and a pair of rebounds. 
 
The Lady Chargers finished 50 percent (30-of-60) from the floor, 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from three and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from the free throw line.
 
West Alabama returns home for the first of four scheduled home games starting with a two-game series with the Mississippi College Lady Choctaws on Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. and Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. all in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium in Livingston, Alabama.
