Tigers Show Grit in 52-44 Win over MC

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama Women's basketball team did not let being shorthanded act as an excuse as the Tigers battle back from a first half deficit and defeated the Mississippi College Lady Choctaws, 52-44, Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference West Division action in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.

A crucial win to keep UWA in the West Division race, the Tigers are now 7-6 overall and 6-6 in GSC competition while Mississippi College is now 3-10 on the year.

"We felt like no one expected us to win this game except us. I can't be prouder of the way they came out and performed tonight," said Assistant Head coach Veronica Ryan. "We had a slow start in the first half, but they really turned it up in the second half."

West Alabama started that second half down 25-17 as the offensive production couldn't match the defensive intensity at the time, however that changed starting in the third as Zoe Watts scored 12 of her 19 points in the second 20 minutes to help seal the victory.

"She (Watts) was really focused tonight and that's exactly what we needed," said Ryan. The fact that she was locked in and ready to go gave us a key piece tonight and we're looking to get it from her again tomorrow."

Watts added a team leading eight rebounds and two blocks to her stat line. Naelyn Rios scored 12 thanks to going 10-for-12 from the free throw line and tied for team lead with six assists along with six rebounds and two steals. Jala Williams also finished with six assists and added eight points, five rebounds and two assists.

West Alabama shot 43.2 percent (16-of-37) from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-of-11) at the three-point line and 85 percent (17-of-20) at the free throw line.

The Tiger defense limited MC to 29.8 percent (17-of-57) shooting, 20.7 percent (6-of-29) from beyond the arc and the Lady Choctaws were 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from the free throw line.

"Coach Jeff (Lovell) did a really good job coaching them up on defense. We told them before the game they couldn't get in foul trouble, but they did a great job of packing it in," said Ryan.

UWA and MC will meet one more time tomorrow in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium starting at 2 p.m. Links to live stats and live video are available on uwaathletics.com.
