Tigers Come Up Short in Opener Against Hawks

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Shorter pitchers Jonathan Pintaro and Kevin Ludden combined to shut out West Alabama, leading the Hawks to a 3-0 Gulf South Conference baseball victory over the Tigers Friday at Tartt Field.

Shorter improved to 10-6 overall with the victory, 7-6 in GSC play. West Alabama lost for just the second time in eight home outings, dropping to 8-6 and 6-5.

Pintaro (4-1) earned the win, allowing no runs over seven innings while scattering four hits, striking out 11 and walking two. Kevin Ludden worked the final two innings for his third save, striking out three without allowing a hit.

Tiger starter Javian Stone (2-2) was charged with the loss, despite allowing just two hits and one earned run over six innings while striking out 11 and walking four. Landen Davis allowed a hit and a run, striking out three in three innings.

Shorter opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Luis Acevedo singled to left field, driving in Jacob Pajer, who had walked. The Hawks added another run in the top of the sixth when Donovan Frayer drew a leadoff walk, stole second base and scored on a Tiger error off the bat of Nathaniel Butterworth.

West Alabama wasted an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh by not being able to capitalize on having runners at second and third base with one out.

The Hawks capped off the scoring in the top of the ninth when Aaron Reardon singled, driving in Jakob Woods, who had drawn a two-out walk.

Brayden Lyman and Jacobey Hawthorne doubled for West Alabama to account for two of UWA's four hits. The Tigers stranded six runners, going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Shorter managed just three singles in the game and left seven on base. The Hawks were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

The Tigers and the Hawks complete the series with a doubleheader Saturday at Tartt Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
