Tigers Drop Two to Hawks

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - Shorter University took advantage of numerous West Alabama miscues in game two to defeat UWA 10-1 and complete a Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep of the Tigers Saturday at Tartt Field. The Hawks downed the Tigers, 6-5, in game one, earning a three-game sweep for the weekend.

Shorter moved to 12-6 overall and 9-6 in GSC play. The Tigers fell to 8-8 and 6-7.

"We certainly have to execute better," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said.  "Shorter has a very good ball club, but we have to find a way to compete. I am really disappointed in the outcome of the weekend."

UWA had five wild pitches, five passed balls, five errors and allowed 10 walks in game two.

Shorter picked up the win in game one by scoring three runs in the top of the eighth.  Luis Acevedo picked up the go-ahead RBI with a run scoring single. Aaron Reardon had three of the six Hawk hits.  Jake Nemeth led the Tigers with three hits and two RBI.

Acevedo and Kaleeq Branigan each homered for Shorter in the second game.  The Hawks only had five hits, two by Acevedo.  Nemeth had two of the five Tiger hits.

"We really didn't move the runners around today," added Rundles.  "We had a lot of runners in scoring position but we struck out way too many times."

Carson Cook (2-0) earned the win in game one in relief for the Hawks. Taylor Bosclair (2-2) was the starter and winner of game two.  Connor Brooks (2-2) took the loss in game one for UWA and Thomas Boothe (0-1) was charged with the loss in game two.

The Tigers resume play next Friday with a trip to West Georgia to begin a three-game GSC series.
