Wolves Sweep Tigers in GSC Baseball Doubleheader

CARROLLTON, Ga. – West Georgia first baseman Dan Oberst hit three home runs and drove in nine runs to lead the Wolves to a Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep of West Alabama Saturday at Cole Field. West Georgia won the first game, 10-7, and the nightcap, 9-8.
 
West Georgia evened its overall record at 9-9 with the sweep, 9-8 in GSC play. West Alabama dropped to 8-10 ad 6-9 with its sixth straight loss.
 
Oberst was 5-for-7 in the twinbill, scoring five runs and reaching base seven times. In addition to home runs four, five and six of the year, he also tripled in the second game.
 
West Alabama led 7-5 after six innings in the opener, but West Georgia scored a run in the seventh and then Oberst had a three-run blast in a four-run eighth inning to put the Wolves ahead by the final margin. West Georgia jumped to an 8-1 lead in game two before West Alabama battled back to cut the UWG lead to 9-8 in the eighth inning.
 
Sawyer Steele (2-0) picked up the win in relief in game one, striking out five and allowing just two hits over three innings pitched. Wolves starter Andrew Smith (3-0) worked 6.2 innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs to pick up the win in game two.
 
Peyton Warren (0-2) was tagged with loss in the opener, allowing three runs and four hits in 3.2 innings of relief. Tiger starter Connor Brooks (2-3) was the game two loser, allowing eight runs and nine hits in four innings of work.
 
Taylor Clemmons had four hits in the doubleheader for West Alabama, including his first home run of the year. Colden Peebles had three hits in the two games. Trenton Lee and Jonathan Thibodeau had two hits each in the second game. Jake Nemith also homered for the Tigers in the opener, his first of the year.
 
Lane Griffith had four hits in the two games for the Wolves, while Ethan Brant and Jason Fointno chipped in three more. 
 
West Georgia combined for 27 hits in the two games. West Alabama had 10 hits in each game.
 
The Tigers and the Wolves are scheduled to finish the series with a single game Sunday at noon central time. Listen live on SLY 104.9.
