Tigers Fall Short to Union

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama men's soccer team fell 3-2 to Union Saturday at Tiger Stadium to wrap up their 2021 GSC regular season. The Tigers clinched a spot in the GSC Championship Series by finishing fourth in Group A.

"We simply can't concede goals in the manner in which we did and expect to win games," UWA head coach Ross Nelson said. "We were poor in the first half but much better in the second. We created a lot of chances and very easily could have scored more goals."

UWA is now 3-3 overall and 1-3 in GSC play. The Bulldogs improve to 3-1 both overall and in the league.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 27th minute from a goal by William Valencia off a penalty kick. Union added another goal late in the first half to push the Bulldogs lead 2-0 over West Alabama.

Tom Lartigue scored his first goal of the season at the 57:11 mark off an assist from Jared Walker cutting Union's lead to 2-1.

The Bulldogs added another goal by Mats Fredriksen at the 60:18 mark.

Not even a minute later, Kyle McLeod also scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Peter Oyetunji.

The Tigers battled hard but the Bulldogs defense didn't allow West Alabama to score again making the final margin 3-2.

UWA out shot the Bulldogs, 14-12,  and won the shots on goal battle, 8-6.

Jules Dechert recorded three saves in the match.

Union's goalie, Botond Nemeth, recorded six saves in the victory over the Tigers.

Three yellow cards and 21 fouls were called in the matchup as the Bulldogs were called for 10 and the Tigers called for 11.

"We are far from done yet. There is still a long way to go. We will be right there," Nelson said.

West Alabama will now host Group B No. 5 Montevallo Wednesday for postseason play. More information will be announced as it is available.
