LIVINGSTON, ALA. - West Alabama outscored Shorter 24-5 in two games as they went on to win the doubleheader today at the UWA Softball Complex.
"It was a successful weekend and it just felt good to put it all out together on all three sides of the ball," said UWA head coach Carie Dever-Boaz. "We will enjoy it for 24 hours and be back to work for West Georgia."
With the two wins, UWA improves to 10-8 overall and 6-6 in GSC while Shorter drops to 4-10 overall and 0-6 in league play.
Game One
UWA was led by a three-run homer by Caleigh Wallace and a two-run homer by Hannah Mynard to give the Tigers a 12-1 victory.
Mynard picked up her first win of the season going three innings and giving up only two hits on a run.
In the first inning, the Tigers scored first in the game and kept the lead throughout. Chrissy Tubbs' double scored Cassie Matlock and LP Trammell's field choice scored Tubbs as UWA took a 2-0 lead.
After Shorter scored a run in the second, the Tigers came back with a big second inning scoring five runs.
Mynard's two-run homer, Matlock's RBI single, Trammell's sacrifice fly, and a Peyton Coots RBI single gave the Tigers a huge 7-1 lead.
In the third, Wallace homered to right center, scoring Presley Witt and Morgan Windham. The Tigers led 10-1 after three innings.
West Alabama added two more runs in the fourth inning to close out the game with a 12-1 victory.
Game Two
The bats stayed hot as the Tigers scored another 12 runs to win 12-4 over the Hawks.
Mary Grace Sheffield went 3-for 3 in the victory with a triple, two singles, three RBIs and two runs scored.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the first inning when Tubbs stole home for West Alabama's first run of the game. An unearned run along with Grace Self's two RBI single gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead after one inning.
Shorter came back with four unearned runs in the second inning to tie the score at 4-4. In the bottom half of the inning, the Tigers scored four more runs.
A Sheffield two RBI single and two more unearned runs gave the Tigers an 8-4 lead.
In the third, the Tigers offense kept on scoring. Trammell hit a RBI double and two more unearned runs gave the Tigers a 11-4 lead after three innings.
The Tigers scored the final run in the fourth when Lexy House scored on a Haylie Best sacrifice fly.
Kacy Noland went four innings giving up seven hits on no earned runs with six strikeouts in the win. Noland improves to 4-2 on the season.
Up next, UWA travels to West Georgia on Friday to kickoff the three-game weekend series. Friday is set for a single game at 6 p.m. with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
