UWA Falls Short in Home Finale to Union

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama volleyball team looked to hand the Union University Lady Bulldogs their first loss of the season and had early momentum, but the visitors found a way to win as Union was victorious in the Gulf South Conference Group A match 3-1 Saturday afternoon in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.

UWA fell to 2-4 on the season and 1-2 in GSC Group A while Union (24-26, 31-29, 25-18, 25-22) stayed undefeated with a 5-0 overall record and 3-0 mark in group play.

"We played better volleyball today and are continuing to progress," said Head coach Hilary Lobenstein. "We have to find some consistency before our next match."

The Tigers and Lady Bulldogs battled each other tough for the first two sets as evidenced by each of the games needing extra points to decide a winner.

However, the match reached a turning point in the third game when UWA worked to a 10-2 advantage following a kill from Ti'Oszalon Hill

From there, Union scored nine of the next 10 points in the set to cut the Tigers lead to 11-10 and followed with another 9-2 run a little bit later to go up 19-15 on the way to a 25-18 win in the game which put the Lady Bulldogs up in the match 2-1 at that point. The team went on to win another close set 25-22 and the match 3-1.

Ally Craig led West Alabama with 12 kills with a .186 attacking percentage. Je'Bria Green also reached double-digit kills with 10 and also finished with three block assists and a solo block to lead the front row with four total blocks.

Lilly Jackson posted a double-double with 14 digs and 12 assists. Desiree Blount passed 26 assists to keep the offense moving while MacKenzie Wells led the back row for the sixth match in a row with 26 digs. Quiara Dunson posted 21 digs, Madison Fisher had 11 and Heloisa Niespodzinski added 10 digs.

The Tigers put up a team attacking percentage of 146 with 50 kills and 23 errors on 185 total attacks. Union finished with an attacking percentage of .198 thanks to 66 kills and 25 errors on 207 total attacks.

Alyssa Tatsch led four Lady Bulldogs with double-digit kills as she finished with 17 kills. Emily Grace Calhoun went for 14, Haley Ramsey posted 12 and Jordan Vick added 10 kills along with 44 assists.

West Alabama will wrap the regular season with two matches on the road starting with a trip to Clinton, Mississippi to face the Mississippi College Lady Choctaws in a non-Group A matchup in A.E. Wood Coliseum on March 17 at 6 p.m. Game links will be available at uwaathletics.com.
