Tigers Split DH with West Georgia

Carrollton, Ga.- West Alabama and West Georgia split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at University Field. The Wolves downed UWA, 9-3, in game one, and the Tigers defeated UWG in game two, 2-1.

"It was not a very good first game today, but the girls fought hard to get game two," UWA head coach Carie Dever-Boaz said. "We have to get back to basics with our hitting, and our itching staff has got to cut out the free passes. We did that in game two today and came out on top."

After the weekend series, the Tigers are now 11-10 overall and 7-8 in GSC play. UWG is 13-4 and 9-3.

Game One
West Georgia broke open a close game by scoring four runs in the sixth inning to win game one, 9-3.

UWA only trailed 5-3 going into the sixth but could not get any closer in the game.

The Tigers tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the second on a Lexy House fielder's choice scoring Kacy Noland.

After tailing 4-1 in the top of the fifth, West Alabama did not stop fighting back as the Tigers scored when Peyton Coots hit a two-run homer scoring Cassie Matlock.

With the home run, UWA made a comeback but West Georgia scored five more runs to close out the game bringing the score to 9-3.

Hannah Mynard (1-1) absorbed the loss for the Tigers allowing six hits and three earned runs.

Game Two
Two late runs pushed West Alabama ahead of the Wolves 2-1 in game two at University Field.

Noland (5-3) pitched a complete game for the Tigers allowing seven hits and one earned run while striking out three.

West Georgia scored one run in the second, but the Tigers held the Wolves for the remaining of the game.

In the sixth, Nicole Buccieri singled scoring Kelsie Gilliam and Chrissy Tubbs, pushing the Tigers ahead of UWG, 2-1.

"We will rest up for a few days and get after prepping for UAH at home next weekend," Dever-Boaz said.

West Alabama hosts a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday against Alabama Huntsville. First pitch is set for noon at UWA Softball Complex.
