Peeples Collects Four Hits in 6-2 Tiger Win

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Colden Peeples collected four hits to lead West Alabama to a 6-2 baseball victory over Delta State in game one of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Ferriss Field.
 
The win improved West Alabama to 7-4 overall, 5-3 in GSC play. The win was the first on the road for the Tigers this season and the first at Delta State since a 13-11 victory on Feb. 20, 2016. The Statesmen dropped to 4-6, both overall and in league play.
 
The Tigers collected 14 hits, with Jake Nemith and Brayden Lyman chipping in two apiece to back up Peeples effort. Lyman's fourth double of the year was the only extra base hit in the game. Gavin Rogers, Jonathan Thibodeau and Lyman each drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers.
 
Javian Stone and Mason Hollander combined to strike out 14 Statesmen and scatter seven hits. Stone (2-1) worked 5.2 innings for the win and Hollander followed with 3.1 scoreless frames for his second save. DSU reliever Hunter Riggins (1-2) was tagged with the loss.
 
With the score tied at 1-1 after four innings, West Alabama punched across a pair of runs in the fifth and never trailed again. Delta scored a single run in the sixth, but UWA iced the game away with three runs in the seventh inning.
 
H White and Jake Barlow each had two hits for the Statesmen.
 
Game two of the doubleheader followed Saturday evening and the series finale is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
