Tigers Shutout DSU in Game 2, Sweep DH

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Connor Brooks and Peyton Warren combined on a four-hit shutout as West Alabama defeated Delta State, 2-0, in game two and earned a sweep of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Ferriss Field.

The win gives the Tigers a win in the three-game series, marking the first series win for West Alabama over Delta State since the Tigers won the GSC championship in 2015.

West Alabama improves to 8-4 with the win, 6-3 in conference play. Delta State is 4-7 overall and 4-7 in the league.

Brooks (2-1) scattered four hits over seven innings, striking out four and walking one to pick up the win. In his first action since the season opener Feb. 6 at West Florida, Warren worked the final two innings without allowing a hit or a run for his first save. Christian Day (1-2)  took the loss, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out 10 and walking two.

"We really pitched well all day and our pitching staff set the tone for the day," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "We were aggressive offensively and I was really pleased with our approach at the plate. We got big hits when we needed them.

"To win two here is huge, but we still have to finish tomorrow," Rundles said. "I was really proud of our effort and the way we went about our business today in both games."

West Alabama scored two runs in the second inning and Brooks and Warren made sure it was enough. Jacobey Hawthorne and Justin Booker drove in UWA's runs.

Gavin Rogers and Taylor Clemmons had two hits apiece in a seven-hit Tiger attack. Rogers, Brayden Lyman and Houston Kitterman all doubled for West Alabama. Four Statesmen had one hit apiece.

The Tigers and the Statesmen are scheduled to finish the series with a single game Sunday at Ferriss Field.
