Tigers Defeat Lady Bucs for First Win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of West Alabama Volleyball team will not have to worry about singing the blues after a successful trip to Christian Brothers University with a 3-1 win to earn the first victory of the season Saturday after in Canale Arena in Gulf South Conference action. 
 
The win also moves the Tigers to 1-1 in GSC Group A play while CBU falls to 0-2 overall and in the group. West Alabama is now 1-3 overall.
 
"We came in focused and positive, and played good, team ball," said Head coach Hilary Lobenstein. "We look forward to continued progress and seeing what we can do in our next match."
 
UWA won the first set, 25-22, before the Lady Bucs took the second set 25-20. From there West Alabama won two straight games, 25-23 and 25-19, to take the match in four sets and earn the road victory.
 
Ally Craig and Madison Fisher both posted nine kills to lead the squad's attacking while Je'Bria Green and Amelia Johnigan both had six kills each. Johnigan also led the team with three solo blocks. Desiree Blount continued to be effective with 25 assists to keep the offense moving while also notching three service aces.
 
Once again, MacKenzie Wells led the back row with 16 digs. This marked the fourth match in a row the junior has led the tea in digs. Fisher also reached the double-digit digs mark with 13.
 
As a team, UWA posted 37 kills and 28 errors on 148 total attacks for a .061 attacking percentage while Christian Brothers registered 42 kills and 23 errors on 150 attacks for a .127 attacking percentage.
 
Madeline McGaha led the Lady Bucs with 16 kills while Rebecca King posted 10 kills. Alayna Maslinski posted 21 assists and also led the back row with 13 digs.
 
The Tigers return home for two straight starting with a nonconference matchup against Mississippi University for Women on March 10 at 6 p.m. in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium in Livingston, Alabama. Game links will be available on uwaathletics.com.
