Big Innings Propel DSU to Win

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State used a pair of big innings on the way to a 14-4 Gulf South Conference baseball victory over West Alabama Sunday at Ferriss Field.
 
The win kept the Statesmen from being swept in the series and improved DSU to 5-7 overall, 5-7 in league play. West Alabama, who won the first two games of the series on Saturday, is 8-5 and 6-4.
 
Delta State belted five home runs in the game, three in the first two innings to take a 9-0 lead after three innings. The Statesmen pushed across six runs in the second inning and the posted a five-spot in the sixth.
 
Statesmen starter Landon Zizmann (2-0) worked the first five innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs, while walking three and striking out five, to pick up the win. Matthew Sneed pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits and no earned runs.
 
West Alabama starter JP Elkins (1-1) was charged with the loss after being chased with one out in the second inning after giving up seven earned runs on five hits. Landen Davis and Austin Kitterman combined to allow seven more runs on nine hits over the final 4.2 innings.
 
Kirkland Trahan and Jake Barlow had three hits apiece in a 14-hit Delta State attack. Josh Smeltzer drove in four runs, while Hayden White and Trahan drove in three each. Smeltzer hit two home runs, his first two of the season. Trahan, Barlow and Darek Sargent also homered for DSU. Trahan and Sargent now have three, while Barlow and White share the team with four. 
 
Gavin Rogers and Taylor Clemmons had two hits each for West Alabama, including Rogers third homer of the year. Colden Peeples doubled for the Tigers.
 
West Alabama returns to action Friday, hosting Shorter at 6 p.m. in the first of a three-game GSC series at Tartt Field. Delta State goes out of conference for a road game at Arkansas-Monticello on Tuesday.
