Tigers Drop Opener at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo exploded for 15 hits on the way to a 14-4 Gulf South Conference baseball victory over West Alabama Thursday at Kermit A Johnson Field at Bob Riesener Stadium.
 
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Montevallo and improves the Falcons to 10-12 overall and 7-12 in league play. West Alabama dropped to 9-11 and 7-10.
 
Montevallo jumped to a 9-0 lead after five innings and was cruising until the Tigers put up a four-spot in the top of the sixth. 
 
Asa Awbrey ended the game with a walk-off grand slam with no outs in the seventh inning on the first pitch he saw from UWA reliever Logan McDowell to ensure a 10-run mercy-rule win for the Falcons.
 
Khalid Collymore had four hits and reached base five times for Montevallo, scoring two runs and driving in two more. Including the grand slam, Awbrey had three hits and drove in six runs. Ben Teel chipped in three more hits for the Falcons and Alex Langford chipped in two more. In addition to Collymore, Teel, Jake Smallwood and Reed Latimer also drove in two runs.
 
Justin Booker had two of West Alabama's five hits, driving in a run. Houston Kitterman drove in two runs with a single in the sixth. A sacrifice fly from Gavin Rogers drove in the Tigers' other run.
 
Kuster Kinlecheenie (2-0) picked up the pitching win for Montevallo in relief. One of six Falcon pitchers, he worked a scoreless fifth, striking out one.
 
West Alabama starter Connor Brooks (2-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing 10 hits and seven runs in 3.2 innings of work. 
 
The Tigers and Falcons are scheduled to finish the three-game series with a doubleheader Friday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
