Tigers Sweep DH to Take Series at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – After a tough day at Kermit A. Johnson Field at Bob Riesener Stadium on Thursday, West Alabama responded in a big way to sweep a Friday road doubleheader at Montevallo and win the Gulf South Conference series.

The Tigers won Friday's first game, 6-5, in 10 innings before returning the favor for Thursday with a 12-3 win in the nightcap. Montevallo won the first game in the series 14-4.

"I am really proud of the way our guys responded today," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "We came to the ballpark ready to play and did what we needed to do to take this series.

"It would have been easy to fold up after losing the way we did Thursday night, but these guys stepped up and answered the bell," Rundles said. "Any time you can come on the road and win two of three in this league that's a good days work."

West Alabama evened its overall record at 11-11 and improved to 9-10 in GSC play, keeping GSC tournament hopes alive. Montevallo is now 10-14 and 7-14.

The Tigers and Falcons jostled back and forth in game one on Friday, with the lead changing hands three times before Montevallo tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth. West Alabama scored the game-winner in the top of the 10th when Houston Kitterman raced home on a wild pitch.

Mason Hollander (3-0) struck out Falcon pinch hitter Ryan Curran with runners at second and third to close game-one door on Montevallo and secure the pitching win in relief. Hollander worked two innings, allowing a hit and a run while striking out four. Montevallo reliever Kuster Kinlecheenie (2-1) absorbed the loss.
UWA starter Thomas Boothe (1-1), the first of four Tiger pitchers, was credited with the win in game two. UM starter Zach Toth (1-2 was tagged with the loss after leading a parade of five Falcons to the mound.

West Alabama started fast in game two by scoring six runs in the top of the second inning and was never really challenged. After the Falcons pushed across three runs in the third, West Alabama rallied for a three-spot in both the sixth and the ninth innings for the final 12-3 margin.

The Tigers combined to get 24 hits in the two games, while Montevallo had 17. The Tigers also left a combined 20 runners on base and the Falcons stranded 27.

Brayden Lyman collected six hits in the twinbill for West Alabama, including his first home run of the season, and drove in four runs. Including his second homer of the season, Jake Nemith had four hits for the Tigers. Taylor Clemmons had three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs. Gavin Rogers also chipped in three hits.

Ben Teel collected four hits in the two games to lead Montevallo. Riley Cain chipped in three hits. Greg Lewandoski doubled and tripled in game one for UM.

West Alabama remains on the road, traveling to Valdosta State (14-10, 12-9) for a three-game league series that starts with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 10. Montevallo begins a three-game GSC series Friday at No. 13 West Florida (22-5, 21-5).
