Blazers Secure Second Walk-off Win in Series over UWA

VALDOSTA, Ga. – For the second time in the three-game series Valdosta State scored a walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth inning to sweep the Gulf South Conference series Monday at Billy Grant Field, and for the second time in the series it was Logan Stephens at the plate to walk the Blazers off against West Alabama.

Stephens reached on a Tiger throwing error with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth, allowing Ben Rowden to score and hand the Blazers a 4-3 win. Stephens drew a bases-load walk in the first game as VSU won, 7-6.

Valdosta State improved to 17-12 overall with the victory, 15-11 in GSC play. West Alabama is 11-14 and 9-13.

Valdosta State scored three runs in the first inning without the aid of a hit. The Blazers worked UWA starter Thomas Boothe for four walks over the first five hitters that came to the plate, ending the right-handers day. A pair of sacrifice flies and a balk staked VSU to a 3-0 lead. The Blazers wouldn't score again until the game-winner in the ninth.

West Alabama clawed back to tie the game at 3-3 with a single run in second thanks to a Blazer error and then two more in the fifth when Taylor Clemmons' sacrifice fly scored Nick Sims and Gavin Rogers' single plated Jake Nemith, who had doubled .

The Valdosta State ninth unfolded with Ben Rowdon getting a one-out single, stealing second base and then getting away with a base-running blunder by outrunning Tiger shortstop Nick Sims' throw to third on a ball hit in front of Rowdon. Chase Coker got an infield single following the fielders' choice by Nick Lewis to load the bases.

David Mayberry struck out swinging with the bases full for the second out before Stephens' grounder to end it. Stephens was not credited with an RBI due to the throwing error.

Jakob Barker (2-1), the fifth Blazer pitcher of the day, picked up the win striking out three in one inning pitched. Mason Hollander (3-1) took the UWA loss in relief. Tiger reliever Javian Stone put in yeoman's work after replacing Boothe with one out in the first, going 6.2 innings without allowing a run and striking out nine.

Lewis was the only Valdosta State player with two hits as the Blazers managed just five on the day.

Nemith, Rogers, and Jonathan Thibodeau each had two hits for West Alabama.

West Alabama plays at home for the first time since March 13 when third-ranked Lee (25-4, 20-3) visits Tartt Field for a three-game conference series that starts with a single game Friday at 6 p.m. Valdosta State continues its seven-game homestand when West Georgia (14-16, 13-14) visits for a Saturday doubleheader.
