Lee Rebounds to Beat Tigers, 6-3

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – After spotting West Alabama a three-run lead in the first inning, second-ranked Lee battled back to defeat the Tigers, 6-3, in game one of a three-game Gulf South Conference series Saturday at Tartt Field. The game was shortened to seven innings due to a failure in the stadium lighting system.

The win improves Lee to 26-4 overall, 21-3 in GSC play. The Flames have a seven-game road winning streak and are 9-2 on the road. West Alabama lost its fourth straight, dipping to 11-15 and 9-14. The Tigers have now lost five straight home games after winning its first six at the friendly confines of Tartt Field.

West Alabama came out hot in the first inning, using a Taylor Clemmons home run, a double from Jake Nemith and a sacrifice fly from Gavin Rogers to build a 3-0 lead over the league's top team. It would be all the Tigers would score. Clemmons homer was his third.

West Alabama would manage just two more hits the rest of the way, a double off the bat of Jonathan Thibodeau to lead off the fourth inning and a single from JD Roberts to start the fifth.

The Flames picked up a run in the third when Justen Freeman doubled with two outs and was driven home by an Alan Smith single.

Riley Black put Lee on top with a three-run homer in the fourth inning, his second of the year. A pair of singles and a fielders' choice set up Black's blast.

The Flames added two more runs in the sixth inning when Landon Silver doubled to open the inning and was chased by a triple from Black, who finished with four runs batted in. Black then scored on a single from Nate Bynum.

Logan Workman (5-0) went the distance for the Lee win, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out nine. UWA starter Peyton Warren (0-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on 11 hits through 6.2 innings.

Justen Freeman, Ryan Beamish, Silver and Black all had a pair of hits in an 11-hit Lee attack.

The Tigers and Flames are scheduled to play the final two games of the series Sunday. The doubleheader begins at noon at Tartt Field.
