Spring Hill Sweeps Tigers

MOBILE, Ala. – Walker Imwalle's single with two outs and runners on the corners gave Spring Hill an 8-7 walk-off win over West Alabama in game two of a college baseball doubleheader Sunday at Stan Galle Field. The walk-off win also gave the Badgers a sweep of the twinbill after winning the opener, 13-3.

Spring Hill won its fifth straight to improve to 17-12 in just its third game on its home field this season due to COVID and weather issues. West Alabama dropped to 11-19 with its eighth straight loss.

West Alabama opened the scoring in the first game when Jake Nemith doubled and Gavin Rogers hit his fourth home run of the season to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. It was short-lived, however.

Spring Hill scored seven runs on just three hits in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. The Badgers parlayed four walks and a hit batter with the three hits to put up the seven spot. SHC scored four more in the second on a grand slam by Bryce Walker, who also hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning and drove in seven runs in the game.

Justin Booker hit his first homer of the year to close out Tiger scoring in game one, a solo shot in the sixth inning.

West Alabama jumped to a 3-0 lead after four innings in the second game. Nemith hit his fourth homer, a solo shot to open the game and then drove in another in with a single in the second inning. Trenton Lee's solo home run, his first of the year accounted for the other run.

Spring Hill took a 4-3 lead after scoring four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking advantage of a pair of hits and two UWA errors.

West Alabama answered with three runs in the top of the sixth when Taylor Clemmons drove in two runs with a single and Jonathan Thibodeau pushed across another with a single. The Tigers stretched the lead to 7-5 when Nemith walked in the eighth and later scored on a Badger throwing error.

Spring Hill cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth before scoring the game winners in the ninth on three singles and a sacrifice fly.

Clemmons led West Alabama hitters with five hits in the doubleheader. Nemith added three more hits in game two, as did Thibodeau and Nick Sims.

Joseph Guidry collected six hits in the two games for Spring Hill, while Imwalle and Frankie Timphony had three in game two.

Spring Hill starter Geo Camfield (4-3) worked six innings, allowing nine hits and three earned runs while striking out five to pick up the pitching win in game one. UWA starter Javian Stone (2-3) allowed five hits and 10 runs in just one inning to take the loss in the opener.

Michael Cabeza (2-0), the sixth Badger pitcher in game two, picked up the win in the second game, allowing not hits in a scoreless top of the ninth. JP Elkins (1-3) absorbed the loss, allowing two runs in three hits in two-thirds of a ninth inning.

West Alabama travels to Birmingham to play Alabama Huntsville in a non-conference, neutral site game at the Hoover Met on Tuesday. Firs pitch is set for 3 p.m. Spring Hill closes its season against Columbus State on Wednesday at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile.
