UAH Hangs on for 14-13 Baseball Win over Tigers

HOOVER, Ala. – Alabama Huntsville and West Alabama scheduled a baseball game at the Hoover Met on Tuesday and a replica of a slow pitch softball game broke out as the Chargers defeated the Tigers, 14-13, in a game that will not count in the Gulf South Conference standings.

The victory improved the Chargers to 17-15 and West Alabama dropped to 11-20 with its ninth consecutive loss.

West Alabama jumped to a 5-1 lead after three innings, but the Chargers came back to score five runs in the fourth and six more in the sixth. The Tigers cut the lead to the one-run final score by pushing across four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

The two clubs combined for 28 hits to score the combined 27 runs. UAH committed three errors and UWA had four boots.

Zach Duvall had three hits and drove in three runs for Alabama Huntsville, while Garrett Bodine, Carson Villata, Dylan Johnston and Brett Barbee chipped in two hits each. Johnston also drove in three runs.

JD Roberts collected three of West Alabama's 13 hits. Jake Nemeth, Josh Bower and Trenton Lee had two hits apiece. Houston Kitterman, Nick Sims and Lee each drove in two runs.

UAH reliever Tyler Self (3-6), one of eight Charger pitchers, picked up the win, striking out two and allowing one run in 1.2 innings pitched. Heath Senn picked up his first save by facing the minimum in the bottom of the ninth. UWA reliever Kirby Osborn (0-1) absorbed the loss, allowing three runs on two hits in 1.1 innings pitched.

West Alabama concludes the regular season with a three-game GSC series at home against Auburn-Montgomery this weekend. The series opens with a single game Friday at 6 p.m. UAH is host to Valdosta State in a three-game set beginning Saturday in Huntsville, Alabama.
