Tigers Take Care of AUM, 4-2, in Game 1

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Jake Nemith and JD Roberts homered as West Alabama defeated Auburn-Montgomery, 4-2, in the first game of a three-game Gulf South Conference baseball series Friday at Tartt Field.

The win snapped a nine-game losing streak for West Alabama, who improved to 12-20 overall and 10-16 in GSC play. AUM dropped to 17-20 and 15-19.

"We came out and played the game the way it is supposed to be played tonight," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "We got timely hitting, long balls when we needed them and a great job from both our pitchers.

"We look forward to honoring 10 seniors prior to the first game tomorrow," Rundles said. "After that celebration then we will get to work and try to win the series."

Nemith opened the scoring for the Tigers with his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to center field, to lead off the bottom of the first inning.  The Warhawks tied the game at 1-1 on a solo homer from Zach Feaster in the top of the fourth.

The Tigers regained the lead for good on a two-run homer from JD Roberts in the bottom of the fifth. Roberts' first home run of the year chased Houston Kitterman who had singled with one out.

AUM cut the Tiger lead to 3-2 with another solo home run, this one from Landon Pritchett, his third of the year. West Alabama closed the scoring in the eighth when Gavin Rogers and Josh Bower put together back-to-back doubles to plate a run. JP Elkins pinch ran for Rogers and scored on Bower's two-bagger.

West Alabama starter Peyton Warren (1-3) worked 7.1 innings, allowing just five hits and two runs while striking out five for the pitching win. Mason Hollander worked a scoreless 1.2 with four strikeouts for his third save. AUM starter Hunter Viets (3-7) was tagged with the loss.

Nemith had two hits to pace a seven-hit West Alabama attack. Joseph Hartsfield had two of AUM's five hits.

The Tigers and the Warhawks are scheduled to complete the series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Senior Day ceremonies will begin at 12:40 p.m.
