Stans Leads UWA Past Saint Leo with Penalty Kick

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - Vince Stans' penalty kick goal led the Tigers in a 1-0 victory over Saint Leo Sunday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.

"All the credit has to go to the lads today," UWA head coach Ross Nelson said. "It's not easy to grind out a result in the way we did, especially with the conditions today. It was so hot and they battled from start to finish."

"We are 2-2 after playing some top teams from within our region. I'm so proud of the reaction we got today after a tough result on Friday. We must build on this now going into the conference this week."

The Tigers improved to 2-2 on the season while the Lions dropped to 0-3-1.

Stans scored his first goal of the season at the 39th minute off a penalty kick.

The Lions out shot the Tigers, 9-6, with the shots on goal margin as a tie with both Saint Leo and UWA having two.

Jules Dechert earned his fourth start of the season in the net. The junior goalie had two saves in the victory over the Lions in 90 minutes of action.

Four yellow cards and 26 fouls were called in Sunday's match. 15 fouls were called on the Lions, while 11 were called on UWA.

Box Score

The Tigers open up Gulf South Conference play at home Sept. 17 against Spring Hill. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
