Men’s Soccer Drops Home Match to Alabama Huntsville

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama men's soccer team took a 1-0 defeat from Alabama Huntsville in a non-conference matchup  Saturday night at Tiger Stadium.

The Tigers overall record dropped to 3-3 and stayed at 1-0 in GSC play. The Chargers improved to 2-2-1 overall and are 0-1 in the conference.

"It was just not our night, but that's soccer for you," UWA head coach Ross Nelson said. "It's a game of fine margins, and I think tonight really showed that."

"We started really well and created a number of chances but just couldn't hit the back of the net," Nelson said. "Ultimately to win games you have to score goals, and we didn't do that tonight."

After a physical contest in the matchup between UWA and UAH, neither team ended up scoring in the first half. Both teams displayed solid defensive performances.

In the second half, Alabama Huntsville found the back of the net to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.

Alabama Huntsville's defense did not allow West Alabama to score in the second half which allowed the Chargers to take a 1-0 victory over the Tigers.

UAH outshot UWA 13-12 while both teams had three shots on goal. The physical contest featured seven yellow cards with 30 fouls. The Chargers called for 16 of those fouls while the Tigers were called for 14.

Between the posts for UWA was Jules Dechert. He recorded two saves as he faced 13 shots in the 90 minutes of action. Alabama Huntsville's goalie Ethan Haworth had four saves as he faced 12 shots, including three on frame and managed to keep the clean sheet.

Box Score

"As always, we will dust ourselves off, evaluate our performance, and grow from this," Nelson said. "We are back to conference play next weekend against two strong GSC opponents. We will be ready!"

The Tigers continue GSC play with a two-match home series starting October 1st and 3rd as they take on Delta State and Mississippi College. Kickoff against DSU is set for 7:30 p.m., while kickoff against MC is set for 3:30 p.m.
