Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Wins Home Opener against Eckerd College

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama men's soccer members Killian Griffin and Peter Oyetunji led the Tigers in the home opener to defeat Eckerd College, 2-0, Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

"It feels great to start the season with a win, especially against a quality team like Eckerd," UWA head coach Ross Nelson said. "The lads battled from start to finish, and I can't fault any of their effort in tonight's matchup. It's only our first game so it is important we stay grounded."

It was a slow first half for the Tigers but they continued to fight hard and dominated the second half. Freshman Griffin put the Tigers on the scoreboard at the 50:53 mark, scoring his first goal in a UWA jersey off an assist from Oyetunji.

Oyetunji found the back of the net and added another goal for the Tigers off an assist by Aymane El Ammari and Liam Condone at the 60:43 mark.

Eckerd College fought hard but UWA held their offense and kept the 2-0 lead to win the home opener.

UWA out shot the Tritons, 11-8, and won the shots on goal battle, 8-2.

Jules Dechert recorded one save in the victory over Eckerd.

There was one red card, three yellow cards, and 22 fouls called in Friday's matchup against Eckerd College. The Tritons were called for 12 of the fouls while the Tigers were called for 10.

"We must now maximize our recovery since we have a very fast turnaround and play another top team in two days," Nelson said.

The Tigers head to Harrogate, Tennessee to battle Lincoln Memorial Sunday at noon.
