Men's Basketball Wins at Montevallo, 65-51

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The West Alabama men's basketball team continued its recent winning streak by topping Montevallo, 65-51, Wednesday at Trustmark Arena.

Robert Davis scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half as UWA won for the ninth time in its last 10 games. The Tigers (15-3, 8-3 GSC) faced the Falcons for the first time since head coach Nick Woodruff took over the program in 2019 to lead the series 41-26.

Davis was one of four West Alabama players to score double figures. Shardarrion Allen and Te Smith had 13 points each, and Justin Allison scored 10 and led the team with seven rebounds and five assists.

Montevallo (8-11, 6-4) had won six out of its last seven home games, but West Alabama became only the second GSC opponent that the Falcons have lost to on its home court this season.

The Tigers scored 22 points on 18 Montevallo turnovers while holding the Falcons to just three points on 10 turnovers.

UWA also performed better at the free throw line, sinking 15-of-19 attempts (78.9%), while UM only converted 6-of-13 (46.2%).

After a back and forth battle to start the game, West Alabama pulled ahead by 10 points, 31-21, on a 3-pointer by Smith right before the buzzer sounded to end the first half.

After the break, the Falcons chipped away at the Tigers slight lead and tied the game at 34 on a 3-point jumper by James Neil with 11:08 left.

Montevallo would not pull ahead as UWA went on a 9-2 scoring run before a media timeout was called with 7:41 left.

The Tigers continued to push forward to get their largest lead of the game of 65-48 on a three-point jumper by Allen with under 10 seconds remaining on the clock.

Braxton Bertolette would answer with a 3-pointer of his own for the Falcons right before the game-ending buzzer for the final margin.

West Alabama will have a week-long break from competition before returning home to take on Union University. The Tigers look to remain undefeated at Pruitt Hall Gymnasium as they take on the Bulldogs on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.
