Montevallo Holds Off UWA for 78-61 GSC Win


MONTEVALLO, Ala. - West Alabama women's basketball took a 78-61 defeat from Montevallo in a Gulf South Conference matchup Wednesday evening in Trustmark Arena. 

The Tigers dropped to 11-5 overall and are now 5-3 in GSC play. Montevallo improved to 8-11 overall and 4-7 in GSC play. 

There were three Tigers that scored in double figures. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett posted a double-double, and paced UWA with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Bria Dent posted her eighth double-double. The junior guard scored 15 points and 12 rebounds. Zoe Watts added 14 points.

Montevallo put up the first two points of the game at the 9:47 mark. With 3:50 remaining in the first quarter, Dent scored a layup to bring the game to a 14-all tie. Lauryn Lilly added a three-pointer to gain the 17-14 lead over the Falcons at the 3:15 mark. It was a back-and-forth battle, but UWA held the lead over Montevallo 23-22 to close out the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Watts and Garrett-Hammett scored the first four points of the period to improve the Tigers lead to 27-22. With 7:02 minutes remaining, the Falcons went on a 21-6 run to take the 43-33 lead over the Tigers before heading into halftime. 

Coming out of the half, the Tigers out scored the Falcons 18-15, but it was not enough to take control of the game. Montevallo held the lead and improved it to 58-49 over the UWA to end the third quarter.

To start the fourth quarter, the Tigers went on a 6-0 run to cut the Falcons lead to 58-55. With 6:51 remaining, Montevallo responded with a  20-6 run to close out the game with a 78-61 victory over the Tigers.

UWA shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the free throw line. 

Montevallo guard Marisa Snodgrass led the Falcons with 24 points. 

Montevallo shot 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the floor and 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from beyond the arc.

UWA heads to Montgomery, Ala. on Monday, Jan. 24 to battle Auburn Montgomery in a GSC matchup. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at AUM Athletics Complex.
