Garrett-Hammett, Butler, Watts, and Golden Led the Tigers to a 60-50 Victory over AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - West Alabama women's basketball members, Tazsa Garrett-Hammett, Justyna Butler, Zoe Watts, and Jada Golden all scored in double-figures to lead the Tigers to a 60-50 victory over Auburn Montgomery in a Gulf South Conference matchup Monday night at AUM Athletics Complex.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 12-5 on the season and 6-3 in GSC play. The Warhawks dropped to 5-9 overall and are now 0-8 in the conference. 

Garrett-Hammett posted her fifth double-double. She led the Tigers with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Butler scored 12 points and brought down five boards. Watts added 10 points and six rebounds. Golden also scored 10 points and dished out six assists.

Two minutes after tip-off, AUM scored the first two points of the game. The Warhawks out scored the Tigers 12-9 in the first quarter. Watts put up four points, Golden made her layup, and Ella Felkins added three free throws. 

In the second quarter, with 9:51 remaining, AUM hit a three-pointer to improve the lead to 15-9. Butler drained a three-pointer at the 9:01 mark, Felkins made a jumper, and  Garrett-Hammett added a layup which allowed the Tigers to take the 16-15 lead over the Warhawks with 7:42 remaining. 

AUM outscored UWA 9-8 to close out the half, but the Tigers held on the lead with a two-point advantage, 25-23 before halftime.

In the third quarter, AUM knocked down a three-pointer, then the Tigers responded by going on a 7-0 run to improve the lead to 32-26. With 4:31 minutes remaining, the Warhawks made two free throws, a layup, and a three pointer to pull ahead of the Tigers 34-33. 

Zoe Watts responded with a layup which allowed the Tigers to take the 35-34 lead at the 2:47 mark in the third quarter. AUM gained a three point advantage by scoring a three-pointer and a free throw to take control of the game, 37-34.

With 1:12 remaining in the third quarter, Lilly knocked down a free throw and made a layup to bring the game to a 37-37 tie. The Warhawks had scored again, but Watts responded with a jumper to make the game 39-all with 34 seconds. Garrett-Hammett closed out the third quarter with a layup and took the 41-39 lead over the Warhawks.

In the fourth quarter, the Tigers outscored the Warhawks 19-12. Garrett-Hammett scored 10 points alone in the fourth period. Golden had six points, and Butler drained a three-pointer to claim the 60-50 victory over AUM. 

UWA shot 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the floor and 88.9 percent (16-of-18) from the free throw line.  

AUM Jordan Brewster led the Warhawks with 17 points.

Valdosta State shot 31.7 percent (19-of-60) from the floor, 28 percent (7-of-25) from beyond the arc, and 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from the free throw line.

UWA returns to Pruitt Hall on Saturday, Jan. 29 to battle Lee University in a GSC matchup. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.
