LIVINGSTON, Ala. – After a successful fall season, the West Alabama baseball team will return to the diamond Tuesday afternoon to open the 2022 season. The Tigers will open the year at home against Arkansas – Monticello at 2 p.m. at Tartt Field.
All home games and all conference games will be broadcast live on SLY104.9 with commentary by Will Atkinson or Mark Gilliam. Games at Tartt Field will be live streamed on the UWA Athletics YouTube page, with live stats available on the website.
West Alabama returns starters at all but two positions, including Preseason All-Gulf South Conference Team honorees, third baseman Jake Nemith and outfielder Brayden Lyman. Nemith was the only Tiger to play and start in all 34 games, and Lyman led the team with a .369 batting average. Nemith was also named to the 2022 NCBWA DII Preseason All-South Region Team.
The Tigers will have three veterans return to the bull pen in graduate student Peyton Warren, senior Mason Hollander, and senior Javian Stone. They will be assisted by newcomers Brenton Thiels from Otis, La., and Cade Miller from Jasper, Ala.
UWA enters its 21st season under the leadership of head coach Gary Rundles. In his tenure at West Alabama, Rundles has amassed a 619-431 record, six NCAA Regional appearances, and both a regular season and GSC conference tournament title. The Tigers finished the 2021 season 13-21 and 11th in the GSC standings.
