UWA Men’s Basketball Cruises by Central State in Season Opener

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama men's basketball team cruised by Central State 85-48 in the 37-point victory Friday evening for the season opener inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.
 
"These are really hard games to prepare for without knowing much about the opponent," head coach Nick Woodruff said.
 
"I am pleased with our team's effort to defend tonight," Woodruff said. "We came out of the break at half time and had a stretch where we really guarded, and we were able to get away from them."
 
"We know that defending is our ticket to a successful season, and we will have to continue to improve in a lot of areas individually and as a team to get where we want to be," Woodruff added. 
 
Three Tigers scored in double figures in the matchup. Kuran Garner led the Tigers with 20 points, five rebounds, and four steals. Terry Durham posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Thaddeus Williams had 11 points.

Justin Allison added eight points, three assists, two rebounds, and two steals. CJ Melton had seven rebounds and also dished out three assists. 
 
As a squad, the Tigers shot 44.9 percent (31-of-69) from the field, 32 percent (8-of-25) from beyond the arc, and 75 percent (15-of-20) from the free throw line. 
 
UWA held a 34-20 advantage over Central State heading into halftime. Coming out of the half, the Tigers went on a 17-0 run to extend the lead to 51-20. With 12:47 remaining in half, Central State knocked in a free throw to break the 17-point run. 
 
With 10:52 remaining, the Tigers went on a 21-8 run and held a 40-point advantage over Central State, 70-30.
 
The Tigers continued to rally and closed out the game with an 85-48 victory over the Marauders. 
 
UWA held Central State to shoot 40 percent (18-of-45) from the field and 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the free throw line. 
 
Joshua Scretchen dropped 10 points and had four rebounds for the Marauders. Kevin Moore added nine points and seven rebounds. 
 
The Tigers dominated in the paint and outscored the visitors 34-16 and turned the Marauders' 23 turnovers into 26 points. Central State held the advantage in bench points, 37-28.
 
The Tigers return to action on Sunday against Albany State. Tip-off is at 3 p.m. inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.
