Men's Basketball Claims 76-68 Win over Montevallo in GSC Opener

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - West Alabama men's basketball team defeated Montevallo 76-68 in the Gulf South Conference opener Saturday evening at Trustmark Arena. The Tigers improved to 3-0 and are now 1-0 in GSC play. Montevallo dropped to 1-3 overall and is 0-2 in the conference.

Three Tigers scored in double figures. Terry Durham and Justin Allison posted 17 points. Durham had seven rebounds, and Allison had five. CJ Melton added 15 points and five rebounds. Shardarrion Allen had seven rebounds.

Both teams went back and forth in the first quarter. With 6:13 minutes remaining in the first quarter, Kuran Garner knocked down a jumper to give UWA a 20-17 advantage. The Tigers took the 33-29 lead heading into halftime.

With 15:17 minutes remaining in the second half, Melton had a big dunk, and Allison drained three three-pointers to continue the lead, 55-45. The Falcons outscored the Tigers, 23-21, with eight minutes left, but UWA held onto the lead to claim the 76-68 win over Montevallo.

Mason Shifflett led the Falcons with 13 points and four rebounds. Braxton Bertolette added 12 points and seven rebounds during the matchup.

The Tigers turned the Falcons' 21 turnovers into 19 points. Montevallo held the advantage in bench points, 21-11, and points in the paint, 24-22.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday as they host Oakwood. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. inside Pruitt Hall.
