Women’s Basketball Opens GSC Play with 68-57 Win over Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - West Alabama women's basketball team opened up Gulf South conference play with a 68-57 victory over the Montevallo Falcons Saturday afternoon inside Trustmark Arena. 
 
The Tigers improved to 2-1 overall and are 1-0 in GSC play. The Falcons dropped to 0-5 and are now 0-2 in the conference. 
 
Four Tigers posted double figures. Bria Dent posted her third double-double of the season with15 points and 14 rebounds. Zoe Watts added 16 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Maryanne Logsdon posted 13 points and three rebounds. Jala Williams added 11 points, nine assists, eight rebounds, and two steals.
 
UWA shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the field, 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from beyond the arc, and 81.8 percent (9-of-11) from the free throw line. 
 
The Tigers had a 19-10 lead after the first quarter. Logsdon had seven points in the first. UWA held the lead heading into the half with a 20-15 advantage. Logsdon and Watts each had nine points at the half. Takesia Barnes had seven at halftime. 
 
Coming out of the half, the Falcons outscored the Tigers 17-14 in the third quarter, but UWA held the 53-42 advantage. The Tigers closed out the game with a 68-57 victory to claim their first GSC win of the 2022-23 season. 
 
Montevallo shot 33.9 percent (21-of-62) from the field, 28 percent (7-of-25) from the three-point range, and 80 percent (8-of-10) from the free throw line. 
 
Michaella Edwards led the Falcons with 11 points and two rebounds. Savannah Cook added nine points and four rebounds. Jordan Parker led the Falcons in rebounds with six. Marisa Snodgrass dished out six assists. 
 
West Alabama hosts Spring Hill on Tuesday. Tip-off starts at 5 p.m. at Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.
