Men's Hoops Claimed 80-71 Road Win over Delta State in Overtime

CLEVELAND, Miss. - West Alabama men's basketball team claimed the 80-71 road victory over Delta State in overtime in Gulf South Conference action Sunday evening inside Walter Sillers Coliseum.
 
The Tigers improved to 8-2 overall and are 5-2 in GSC play. The Statesman dropped to 1-9 overall and 1-7 in the conference. 
 
The Tigers shot 55.4 percent (31-of-56) from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line (18-of-24).
 
Justin Allison led the Tigers' offense, shooting 44.4 percent from the field and going 9-for-10 in free throws. Allison posted 17 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Terry Durham scored 16 points, grabbed four rebounds, and had an assist. 
 
Shardarrion Allen and Marvin Price added 12 points for the Tigers. Allen also had four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Price had three rebounds in the matchup. CJ Melton grabbed seven rebounds. 

UWA shot a free throw due to technical difficulties with the shot clock before tip-off. Allison made the foul shot. Right after tip-off, Durham immediately made a layup, followed by another layup from Allison a few minutes later, giving the Tigers a 5-0 lead. 

 
With 9:53 remaining in the first half, the game was tied 17-all. The Statesmen went on an 11-0 run at the 9z:31 mark to pull ahead of the Tigers, 28-17. DSU was up 40-31 at the half. 
 
The second half was a back-and-forth battle between both teams. The regulation game ended in a 67-67 tie. 
 
The Tigers jumped to a 7-0 lead to start overtime, giving UWA a 72-67 advantage. The last six points UWA scored were all free throws by Thaddeus Williams, Melton, and Allison. The Tigers closed the game out with an 80-71 win over the Statesmen. The score was tied six times, with four different lead changes. 
 
Delta State shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the floor, 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from beyond the arc, and 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the foul line.
 
UWA turned DSU's nine turnovers into 10 points. The Tigers won in bench points, 22-7. The Statesmen held the advantage in points in the paint, 28-24. 
 
Maalik Cartwright led Delta State's offense with 24 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Wyatt Bell posted 16 points in the matchup.
 
The Tigers host a non-conference matchup against Berry on Wednesday at 5 p.m. inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.
