Tigers Hand Berry College First Loss of the Season

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama men's basketball team handed Berry College its first loss of the season and defeated the Vikings 78-65 in a non-conference matchup Wednesday evening inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium. The Tigers improved to 9-2 overall, while Berry dropped to 8-1.
 
As a unit, the Tigers shot 42.2 percent (25-of-59) from the field, 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from beyond the arc, and 88.5 percent (23-of-26) from the free throw line.
 
Kuran Garner led the Tigers' offense, shooting 54 percent from the field and going 6-for-6 from the foul line. Garner posted 22 points, had five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Terry Durham posted 13 points and grabbed a season-high of 16 rebounds. Justin Allison also posted 13 points. 
 
Marvin Price added nine points. Shardarrion Allen posted eight points and grabbed nine rebounds. Thaddeus Williams added seven points, while CJ Melton had six points and five rebounds to round out the Tigers' scoring on the night. 
 
The Tigers went on an 18-0 run in the first quarter to jump to a 20-7 lead at the 10:21 mark. UWA closed out the first half with a 19-point advantage over Berry College, 40-21. 
 
UWA scored the first three points coming out of the half. The Vikings responded by going on a 7-0 run to trim the Tigers' lead to 43-28. Both teams went back and forth, but UWA remained ahead. With 5:41 remaining in the game, the Tigers scored 22 points. Of the 22 points, 16 of them were free throws, allowing the Tigers to take the 78-65 victory over the Vikings. 
 
Berry shot 36.9 percent (24-of-65) from the floor, 26.9 percent (7-of-26) from the three-point range, and 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the foul line.
 
West Alabama won in bench points, 16-99, and points in the paint, 34-32. 
 
Three Vikings posted double figures. Owen Honroth led Berry's offense with 18 points. Chase Ellis posted 14 points, and Riley Costas added 11.
 
The Tigers host a conference matchup against West Georgia on Sunday at 4 p.m. inside Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.
