Tigers Claim 56-48 Win over UAH in Midweek Game

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama women's basketball team defeated Alabama Huntsville 56-48 in a Gulf South Conference midweek game on Wednesday in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium. The Tigers improved to 15-8 overall and are now 9-6 in GSC play.

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett and Jada Golden led the Tigers with 15 points each. Garrett-Hammett added seven rebounds. 

The Tigers shot 36.4 percent (4-of-11) from the field and 50 percent (3-of-6) from beyond the arc. 

In the first quarter, UAH put the first five points on the scoreboard. West Alabama battled but was still outscored by the end of the first quarter 15-11. 

With 9:36 remaining in the second quarter, Golden made a three-pointer and Garrett-Hammett made a layup to cut the Charges lead to 17-16. UAH outscored UWA for the remainder of the second quarter, allowing them to keep the 27-23 lead before halftime. 

UWA had its best half in the third quarter when they scored 16 points compared to UAH's 10 points. With 6:11 remaining in the quarter, Lauryn Lilly made a jumper to cut the Chargers lead to 30-29. Zoe Watts made two free throws, allowing UWA to pull ahead of UAH 31-30. It was a back-and-forth battle for the remainder of the quarter, but Ella Felkins made two back-to-back layups and was able to  keep the lead over UAH, 39-37. 

In the fourth quarter, the Chargers scored four points to start the period. The Tigers responded by going on a 9-0 run, giving UWA a 48-42 advantage over UAH. West Alabama scored eight more points, all which were free throws, to close out the game and claim the 56-48 victory over Alabama Huntsville. 

The Chargers shot 35.8 percent (19-of-53) from the field, 20 percent (2-of-10) from beyond the arc, and 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from the free throw line.

The Tigers take on Union on Saturday, Feb. 19 with a tip-off time at 2 p.m. inside Fred Delay Gymnasium in Jackson, Tennessee.
