No. 5 Union Takes Down the Tigers 90-51 in GSC Action

JACKSON, Tenn. - West Alabama women's basketball team took a 90-51 defeat from No. 5 Union University in a Gulf South Conference matchup on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Fred Delay Gymnasium. 

The Tigers dropped to 15-9 overall and are now 9-7 in GSC play. The Bulldogs improved to 20-2 overall and are now 16-0 in the conference.

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett and Bria Dent were the only two Tigers to score in double figures. Garrett-Hammett scored 18 points and brought down four boards. Dent added 12 points and four rebounds. 

The Tigers shot 42.6 percent (20-of-47) from the field, 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from beyond the arc, and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from the free throw line. 

In the first quarter, Union scored the first three points of the game. The Bulldogs went on to out score the Tigers 23-14. Garrett-Hammett had 10 points of the 14 points scored, while Dent and Jada Golden each chipped in two points in the first quarter.

Ella Felkins started the second quarter with a layup, cutting Union's lead to 23-16. With 9:03 minutes remaining in the quarter, Union added two free throws, improving its lead to 25-16. 

UWA responded with a layup from Garrett-Hammett at the 7:34 mark, and a Bria Dent jumper with 7:06 minutes left. The Bulldogs closed out the second quarter, by scoring 17 more points compared to the Tigers 4 points, giving Union a 42-24 lead over UWA.

Coming out of the half, the Tigers had their best quarter, scoring 17 points. The Bulldogs also had their best quarter, scoring 28 points, gaining a 70-41 advantage over West Alabama.

Union closed out the fourth quarter by scoring 20 points compared to West Alabama's 10 points, allowing the Bulldogs to claim the 90-51 win over the Tigers.

The Bulldogs shot 62 percent (31-of-50) from the field, 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from beyond the arc, and 81 percent (17-of-21) from the free throw line. 

Union center Jaelencia Williams scored 19 points and brought down seven boards.

The Tigers take on Lee University on Monday, Feb. 21 with a tip-off time at 5 p.m. inside Paul Dana Walker Arena in Cleveland, Tenn.
