Second Half Surge Results in Tiger Victory at Shorter, 73-67

ROME, Ga. – Kortrijk Miles scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds, as a second-half surge pushed West Alabama over Shorter 73-67 Wednesday evening.

Three other UWA players scored in double figures inside Winthrop-King Centre. CJ Melton has his best game as a Tiger to record a career-first double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Shardarrion Allen had 14 points and four rebounds, while Justin Allison also had 14 points with five boards. The Tigers extend their winning streak to four games overall and five on the road.

West Alabama (19-4, 12-3 Gulf South Conference), despite having the No.3 defense nationally, struggled to stop the Hawks from scoring in the first half of the game. An increase in the Tiger offense eventually led to a late-game victory. Overall, the Tigers hit 24 of 59 (40.7 percent) and only four of 15 (26.7 percent) from behind the arc. UWA did hit 21 of its 26 (80.8 percent) free throw attempts in the game.

Shorter (4-15, 1-13 GSC) made 26 of its 58 (44.8 percent) attempts from the field, including six of 15 (40.0 percent) in three-point range. The Hawks bench outscored the Tigers 17-7 and had more on-court points 67-35. Shorter committed one less turnover than UWA 11-12, but West Alabama converted the Hawks miscues into more points 18-13.

UWA won the rebounding battle 36-28 and outscored Shorter 10-2 in second-chance points. The Tigers also had fewer fouls, 21-14.

Shorter got off to a quick start, taking a 7-0 lead early in the game. West Alabama broke its scoring silence three minutes in as Allen went up for a layup.

Shots continued to land for the Hawks, and the Tigers defense struggled to slow the effort. Shorter assembled an 11-0 run to take a 43-25 lead, the largest of the competition, with 1:27 to play in the half. West Alabama closed the period scoring seven in a row to cut the Hawks'advantage to 43-32 at the break.

UWA hit 12 of 28 (42.9 percent) in the first half, including one of seven (14.3 percent) from behind the arc. Miles and Allen led West Alabama with eight points each in the first 20 minutes. On the other hand, SU made 17 of 43 (60.7 percent) with five of eight (62.5 percent) in three-point range.

Early in the second half, the Tigers went on a 16-4 run to take their first lead of the game, 48-47, with 14:42 left to play. West Alabama would stay in step with Shorter for the remainder of the game, never trailing for more than a point. The Tiger closed the game with a 6-2 run to take the 73-67 victory.

West Alabama earned the sweep of the regular-season series with the Hawks, defeating Shorter 80-65 on Dec. 18 in Livingston. In Wednesday's game, the Hawks got 20 points from Jaden Dunham, 16 from Ricky Knight, Jr., and 14 from Mark Wilcox, Jr.

On Saturday, the Tigers return to action, hosting West Georgia inside Pruitt Hall. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
