Shorter Hangs on to 71-69 Win over Tigers

ROME, Ga. - West Alabama women's basketball team took a tough 71-69 loss to Shorter University in a very close Gulf South Conference matchup Wednesday night at Winthrop-King Centre.

The Tigers dropped to 13-8 overall and 7-6 in GSC play. The Hawks improved to 3-12 overall and are now 1-11 in the conference..

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett, Bria Dent, and Jada Golden all scored in double figures to lead the Tigers' offense. Garrett-Hammett scored 26 points and brought down four boards in the matchup. The LaGrange, Ga. native went 10-for-17 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. 

Dent scored 13 points and had four rebounds. The Birmingham, Ala. native went 6-for-10 from the field and 1-for-2 from the free throw line. Golden added 10 points, two assists, and two rebounds. 

The Tigers shot 56.5 percent (26-of-46) from the field, 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from beyond the arc, 75 percent (12-of-16) from the free throw line. 

In the first quarter, Shorter struck first with a three-pointer at the 9:18 mark, giving the Hawks a 3-0 advantage over the Tigers. With 4:50 minutes remaining, the Hawks then went on a 10-4 run. Garrett-Hammett had scored all four of the Tigers points.

With 4:22 minutes left in the first quarter, the Tigers and the Hawks both scored nine points each. Shorter still held onto the lead, 22-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Shorter scored the first two points to start off the second quarter, improving its lead to 24-13. At the 8:09 mark, Golden made a layup and Dent hit a jumper to cut the Hawks lead to 24-17. 

With 7:05 remaining in the second quarter, Garrett-Hammett went on a 6-3 run, making her layup, free throws and jumper to cut Shorter's lead to 29-23. UWA outscored Shorter 7-5 with 4:18 minutes left, cutting the game to 34-30 before heading into halftime. 

Coming out of the half, UWA had a strong start, going on an 8-0 run, allowing the Tigers to take control of the game. Golden drained a three-pointer, followed by Dent's layup, ending with Lauryn Lilly hitting a three-pointer, to gain a four-point advantage over the Hawks, 38-34. 

With 7:34 remaining in the third quarter, the Hawks went on a 7-1 run, taking the lead back over, 41-40. Golden hit a jumper at the 4:37 mark along with Zoe Watts making a layup at the 3:52 mark, allowing the Tigers to gain the three-point advantage over the Hawks, 44-41. 

With 2:59 remaining, the Hawks outscored the Tigers 10-5 to close out the third quarter and take back control of the game 51-49.

It was a back-and-forth battle in the fourth quarter. With 1:47 minutes left, Dent made her free throw to tie the game 68-all. Shorter then made a layup and a free throw to take the 71-68 lead. Golden made her free throw with three seconds left to cut the Hawks lead to 71-69. 

The Hawks shot 60 percent (9-of-15) from the field, 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from beyond the arc, 75 percent (9-of-12) from the free throw line.
