Rogers, Bower Lead Tigers to Win over Wolves

LIVINGSTON, Ala.Gavin Rogers pitched a complete-game shutout while collecting three hits and Josh Bower homered twice as West Alabama opened its Gulf South Conference baseball series against West Georgia with a 10-0 victory Friday at Tartt Field.

West Alabama improved to 8-21 overall, 6-7 in GSC play, with mercy-rule win in seven innings. West Georgia dropped to 12-12 and 5-10. The Tigers and the Wolves complete the series with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.

In his first start of the season, Rogers (1-1) worked seven innings, scattering four hits while striking out eight and walking three. West Georgia starter Austyn Wright (3-2) absorbed the loss in just his second start of the season, allowing six hits and two runs while recording five outs.

"I was really pleased with our effort today. We came out aggressive and ready to play," UWA head coach Gary Rundles. "Gavin had a huge day on the mound, while both he, Josh (Bower) and Braxton (Bullard) put together good days at the plate.

"It was a great way to begin a series, but we need some carry over into the doubleheader Saturday," Rundles said. "Every day you have the opportunity play is a new day."

Bower got the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the second with a two-run homer and followed that with a solo shot in the sixth. An RBI double in the third inning gave Bower four runs batted in on the day. The junior from Headland, Alabama now has six home runs.

West Alabama put the game away with a seven-run third inning, taking advantage of four hits and three West Georgia errors.

Bullard also had three hits for West Alabama, while Braydon Lyman and Jonathan Thibodeau chipped in two apiece in a 14-hit UWA attack.

No West Georgia player managed multiple hits off Rogers.
