Wolves Rebound to Win Series

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – After being shut out in the series opener on Friday, West Georgia rebounded to score 22 runs on 23 hits in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep over West Alabama Saturday at Tartt Field. The Wolves won the opener, 15-12, and then claimed the series with a 7-2 win in the nightcap.

West Georgia improved to 14-12 overall, 7-10 in league play. West Alabama is 8-23 and 6-9.

The Wolves hung on for the win a game-one slugfest where the Tigers and Wolves combined for 35 hits. UWG put a crooked number in the line score in seven innings on Saturday.

After collecting 18 hits in the opener, game two began the same way game one finished for UWG. Wolves designated hitter Brody Wortham hit the first pitch of the game out of the park for his sixth home run of the season. Collin Moore followed with his fourth of the year, a three-run shot to give the Wolves a 4-0 lead.

West Georgia stretched its game-two lead to 7-1 with two more homers in the top of the third, Anthony Calabro had a two-run blast and Logan Fink followed with a solo shot. Both were the third big flies of the year for both Calabro and Fink.

Brayden Lyman drove in his fifth run of the twinbill with a two-out double in the bottom of the first inning in game two. Gavin Rogers chased Kyle Vogler on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the third to cap Tiger scoring in game two.

Vogler collected five hits over the two games, including his second home run of the year, and drove in two runs in the opener. Jake Nemith chipped in four hits in the doubleheader.

Wortham, hitting .400 coming into the doubleheader, had five hits for the Wolves and drove in five runs over the two games. Anthony Calabro and Sam Ladner had three hits each for the Wolves in the first game, including Ladner's seventh homer.

Wolves starter Robert Coleman (1-1) worked six innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out six for the game two win. Ronny Piepmeier worked the final inning for his fifth save. West Alabama starter Peyton Warren (3-5) was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs on five hits. Mason Hollander worked four hitless innings in relief of Warren, walking one and striking out five.

Jack Rasmussen (3-1) earned the West Georgia pitching win in relief of starter Jonathan Hickman in game one, allowing six runs, four earned and six hits. Jackson Hodnick got the final four outs for his first save. UWA starter Brenton Thiels (2-3) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs and seven hits in three innings pitched.

West Alabama steps out of league play by hosting William Carey Tuesday at 4 p.m. West Georgia also takes a break from GSC play by hosting North Georgia Wednesday.
